Trailer hay bag

Trailering is stressful, even for calm horses, and it’s a lot of work for them to steady themselves around curves and over bumps. I want my horse to be as comfortable as possible in the trailer. When he has plenty of easily accessible hay he is pretty happy. I prefer not to use a hay net in the trailer because nets can be frustrating to horses, every bite of hay is work, and a hanging hay net can swing around a lot, bumping into the walls or even the horse’s head, making the whole experience that much more stressful.

I love the World Class Equine Trailer Feed Bag because it holds a lot of hay in a location that is very comfortable for my horse. It is a deep rectangular bag that hangs in the front of the stall in a straight load trailer. It has an adjustable strap on each corner with a clip so you can hang it exactly where you want it. It is very well made of very sturdy nylon with strong stitching.

I attached anchors to the trailer frame for attaching the bag, which was very easy with a drill and sheet metal screws. When I load my horse I unclip one of the corners of the bag so when I crawl under the chest bar I can slip past the hay bag and out the escape door.

The only downside to the bag is that a certain amount of hay ends up on the floor. I find that fluffing the flakes of hay up minimizes this. And it’s easy enough to pick up stray hay off the floor.

I got the medium (“regular”) size, which is 24″ x 18″ x 12″ deep and holds 2 or 3 flakes of hay, plenty for a few hours on the road. They also make 2 larger sizes, XL which is 24″ x 24″ x 12″ and XXL which is 36″ x 24″ x 12″.

I bought mine at Riding Warehouse. I thought the price was very reasonable for such a quality product, and there is a discount if you buy 2 or more.
