It’s hard to believe that Monica and I started this blog and website an entire year ago. Where did the time go? It was just over a year ago on one of our first trail rides of spring when we started talking about the complete lack of information about trail locations, trail maps, information about where you can safely park a trailer, or where you can camp with your horse. From this conversation, Horse Trail Chicks was born!
I never really considered writing a blog, though I really do enjoy talking about my wonderful and silly horse.
However, I really enjoyed blogging it turns out. I get to talk about my horse, my adventures, and learn more about topics that I am very interested in as a research a post. I even got to interview one of my best friends about her Shetland pony and learn more about their unique and awesome partnership.
Monica and I thought this 1 year anniversary would be a good opportunity to reflect on our past blog posts. I thought I would do a “win, place, show” for my favorite posts of Monica’s. So, here is my list:
- Win – Precious Hooves – Shoeing for the Trail – In this post Monica interviews Jen Poulin of Cold Hollow Hoofcare, LLC about shoeing for the trail.
- Place – Precious Spines – Keeping your horse’s musculoskeletal system fit – Monica interviews horse chiropractor extraordinaire Heather Beaudry and talks about helping our horses to do their best and stay strong and sound while trail riding.
- Show – First Aid for the Trail – Monica interviewed Dr. Doug Thal, DVM, the owner of Thal Equine, an equine hospital in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the creator of the Horse Side Vet Guide, a comprehensive horse health website and mobile app. This post is a great resource for what to do in a trail emergency.
I also was thinking about which post of mine I find myself thinking about on a regular basis. That post has to be “Horse Vision – That Explains a Lot!” because it really gave me a better understanding of some horse behavior that previously had been a mystery.
Now I will turn over the mic.. I mean keyboard to Monica.

What I love about writing the blog is that it really gets me thinking. Having to come up with something to write about makes me ponder my horse life, and once I come up with a topic, I really enjoy delving into it. I love interviewing experts for my posts and they always take a turn that I did not anticipate.
My favorite posts of Kerrie’s are:
- Win – Getting Hit in the Face by Branches – My 17-hand Trail Horse – Kerrie talks about how much fun it is to ride a really tall horse on the trail. This is a hilarious post that will have you laughing out loud.
- Place – Why, A Shetland Tale – if you think that the only kind of relationship you can have with a horse involves riding, think again. This is a great story about a woman who loves horses and spends all her time with them on the ground, including trail outings.
- Show – To Lead or to Follow – Gaining Confidence (and not Always Staring at Horse Butts) – in another very funny post, Kerrie talked about how her horse, Prophet, went from the back of the pack to the front and gives advice on how to build confidence in your horse.
In terms of my favorite post of my own, it is – hands down – Kid’s Stuff – which is about the insane stuff I did as a kid – riding at breakneck speed on the beach, and how much I appreciate that experience for giving me the confidence to hop on any horse now, in my later-adulthood.

Congratulations! You two have accomplished a tremendous amount in just one year. Enjoyable to read even for a non-horse person.
