What is a multi-rein? As the name indicates, it is a multipurpose item. Beautifully woven of colorful paracord, you attach it to your reins like this:

The multi-rein can help you on the trail in several ways:

  • As a rein extender, you can hold onto it while your horse is grazing or drinking out of a stream. You don’t have to bend down over the horse’s neck to hold onto the reins.  grazing
  • When riding, you can tuck it under your arm or thigh while you are taking a photo or getting something out of your pocket or saddlebag, without having to drop the reins entirely.
  • If you are on the ground and need to hold your horse while opening a gate or clearing a downed branch you can do so while keeping a good distance from your horse so as to not spook him/her.
  • You can use it in place of a crop by swinging it gently on your horse’s shoulder or rump.crop
  • In a pinch you can unravel the multi-rein and use the strong cord to create a makeshift halter, replace a broken rein or other bit of tack, or use it as a lead rope. There are several yards/meters of cord when the multi-rein is taken apart.
  • Some of the strands are reflective so they provide visibility at night.

I keep my multi-rein attached to my trail bridle at all times and just love it.

Arctic Horse is a woman-owned, women-run, “heart-centered” business in Palmer, Alaska. All of their products are made in Alaska of cruelty-free materials that are locally-sourced when possible, and they pay a living wage to their employees. They primarily make riding skirts for protection from the weather (check them out, they are awesome). The multi-rein was designed by an Arctic Horse employee and the company loved it so much they decided to include it in their product line.

Price: as of December 2018 the multi-rein is $28 and it comes in 4 different colors.

Where to order: from Arctic Horse
