Adventures at Blueberry Hill July 17, 2018 July 15, 2019 Kerrie Garvey

The Horse Trail Chicks and Friends headed over to New York from our home base in Vermont for a weekend of trail riding fun. A high level of fun was definitely achieved!

Our first stop was the ferry across Lake Champlain. The boys always draw quite a crowd on the boat since most people don’t really expect to find four horses crossing a lake on a passenger ferry.

We have a wonderful friend who lives in Elizabethtown, NY right near the Blueberry Hill Trail System, and she lets us and our horses come visit. Our boys are pretty seasoned travelers by this point, so they settled right into their paddock with no drama. After some grazing and water for the horses and some sandwiches and time spent catching up, it was time to ride of course! Prophet was obviously really stressed out about getting going (/sarcasm)…

Our friends were ready to go and were even dressed for the occasion!

Our ride on Saturday was a semi-challenging 5.5 miles. Some of the trails at Blueberry Hill are rocky, some are steep, and we found an area that looked something like you would see in a movie about riding in the desert. Here’s one of our friends and her faithful steed playing the part of movie stunt actors:

The rest of the ride was wonderful. We got to have a fun gallop up one of the wider trails with very nice footing and did some riding in the beautiful green woods.

When we got back, we had a delicious dinner, lots of chatting, and a good night’s sleep. In the morning we went out to feed the ponies only to find them very sleepy with 3 out of the 4 of them laying down snoozing.

Who us? No thank you. Nap time.

These guys were not even motivated enough to get up when they saw us carrying their grain down to them. Caution! What proceeds is a gratuitous display of horse spoiling. Proceed at your own risk.

Yes.. it gets worse…

After an impromptu breakfast in bed, we checked in with our friend’s new lovely cremello horse, Jester. Doesn’t he look like a mystical fairy tale horse?

After a leisurely breakfast for both horses and humans, we got ready to head out again.

Sunday’s trails were both challenging and beautiful. There was one particularly challenging steep section where the horses showed how game they are for this type of adventure. They charged straight up without hesitation (then we all caught our breath at the top!). There were also some nice wide and fairly flat trails to explore.

The trail system is so much fun to explore.

I can’t wait to go back to see what other things we can find.

Sadly our adventures had to come to an end and it was back to the ferry where the boys met their next group of adoring fans. Prophet was unimpressed.

Be sure to check out our page dedicated to this great riding opportunity! If you haven’t been before, I highly recommend making the trip. Click here to go to our Blueberry Hill page.

Happy trails!
